Search for in the U.S. at the Medicare website!

Welcome to MeDiCaLeSe, the first place to look for new and elusive medical words. By and for working medical transcriptionists. This website is updated daily, as time permits. Our database includes terms that are not found in the standard medical references, such as clinical trial acronyms, herbal remedies, products available outside the U.S., discontinued drugs, and unapproved cancer therapies.
Please note that MeDiCaLeSe is not a medical dictionary and does not presume to be a comprehensive source. However, brief definitions of some terms are provided. This is to give the transcriptionist enough information to make an educated guess as to whether the word is the one he or she is looking for.

Effective February 1, 2006, guest users of MeDiCaLeSe.org are limited to five (5) searches in a 24-hour period.

Our search function is written in php for increased speed and has been upgraded to allow for the exclusion of one word from the search results. This is not a wildcard search no ? or * may be used but a fast string search.

For example: The search string arterio will find every occurrence of the words arteriogram, arteriography, arteriole, arteriosus, and arteriovenous. Entering lung in the first box and ca in the second box would produce results that relate to lung cancer, as well as some that do not, i.e. Madelung's disease - carpus curvus, which is radial deviation of the hand.

Continued increase in birth defect of abdominal wall

Feb. 8, 2016 -- Gastroschisis (pronounced gas-tro-SKEE-sis) is a birth defect of the abdominal wall. The baby's intestines stick outside of the baby's body, through a hole beside the belly button.

The baby's intestines stick outside of the baby's body, through a hole beside the belly button. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can also stick outside of the baby's body.

Gastroschisis occurs early during pregnancy when the muscles that make up the baby's abdominal wall do not form correctly. A hole occurs which allows the intestines and other organs to extend outside of the body, usually to the right side of belly button. Because the intestines are not covered in a protective sac and are exposed to the amniotic fluid, the bowel can become irritated, causing it to shorten, twist, or swell.

Soon after the baby is born, surgery will be needed to place the abdominal organs inside the baby's body and repair the abdominal wall. Even after the repair, infants with gastroschisis can have problems with feeding, digestion of food, and absorption of nutrients ...
